As the cities become increasingly alike, design seems to be gradually limited to filling in the blanks of a standardized answer sheet constrained by countless rules and regulations. Architects spend more time bidding on projects, revising drawings, calculating floor areas, and checking codes that the joy of creating is forgotten.
But architectural design itself should be fun. Those fleeting and luminous moments that touch us the most when building a toy tower in our childhood, or the quiet awe of passing an old house and feeling the weight of time etched into its walls.
Today, caught in the maze of the profession, it's natural to feel confused or lost. In times like these, why not gather a few friends for a chat? In a relaxed conversation, we may just rediscover the original joy of design.
In 2025, 米salon started a new journey to continue creating an independent and equitable platform for dialogues in design.
Initiated by atelier mearc, and co-organized by ATAH, Roca Gallery, and MONOARCHI, the program seeks to foster open exchange and critical reflection within the architectural community as it continues to champion thoughtful, engaging conversations that inspire designers to confront challenges, celebrate creativity, and imagine the future of architecture together.
The inaugural event this year, held on Wednesday, 2nd April, was titled “The Pleasurable Predicament”, inviting participants to “re-examine the maze and rediscover the joy of architecture.” Guest speakers drew from their personal experiences and creative processes to explore the tensions between struggle and pleasure in design, uncovering new possibilities and perspectives for architectural practice.
